The Volunteers Collective supports Birmingham Light Festival

With just under 775 hours contributed, United By 2022’s dedicated Volunteer Collective provided passionate support across all 11 artworks at Birmingham Light Festival, helping bring the city-wide event to life.

Across four nights, a total of 60 volunteers supported the event, showcasing their ongoing commitment to the Birmingham community. Each night, the dedicated volunteers interacted with guests, answered questions and worked alongside the production team to ensure the festival ran smoothly.

As part of its support for the inaugural event, United By 2022 also funded the Floor is LAVA x Silent Disco activation, which proved to be a festival highlight, with early footfall figures showing over 5,000 people enjoyed the experience.

With over 2,100 members, United By 2022’s Volunteers Collective has supported numerous events across the region including major sporting championships, community-led events, and large-scale arts and culture festivals.

Nicola Turner, CEO of United By 2022, said: “We’re immensely proud of our volunteers and the incredible dedication they showed during Birmingham Light Festival. Their passion, enthusiasm and hard work not only helped make the inaugural festival a huge success but also highlighted the incredible community spirit that makes Birmingham so special.”

Maureen Levermore, one of the volunteers, commented: “Volunteering at Birmingham Light Festival was truly an honour. The atmosphere across the four days was electric and it felt amazing to see guests of all ages enjoying themselves, knowing I had a small part in making it happen.

“The experience has expanded my love for Birmingham and reminded me of how powerful volunteering can be when we come together for our community.”

“We are busy crunching the numbers and evaluating the impact of the inaugural festival, but the feedback so far has been absolutely incredible. Birmingham Light Festival really has been a story of a city coming together to deliver something extraordinary in the face of adversity and it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of United By 2022 and the amazing team of volunteers”

Alex Nicholson-Evans, Festival Director for Birmingham Light Festival
